Street graphics. India
Originally this project was meant to be a single exhibition, but the material keeps piling and seeks for the way out, so it's likely to be something more than that. Here you can see the report on previous exhibition. The progress is also available in my photo gallery.
The exhibition took place in St. Petersburg Union of Designers during the period from 1st through 15th of September, 2004.
Authors: Anastasia Beltyukova, Vladislav Lyashuk.
We do not claim this project to be the systematic study of India's outdoor advertisement and street graphics, it's certainly just our personal view. Our challenge was to soak the observer in the atmosphere of India's streets, to catch the unique spirit of this country in the context of the street graphics and at the same time to show our ad people how their Indian fellows work out their day-to-day tasks in a truly timeless way.
Apart from its visual component, the exhibition was also amplified with the audio content from Vladislav Lyashuk (SUPER SPECIAL SOUND SYSTEM) who wouldn't leave his microphone alone in his journey and later brought the collected material together in a fairy 70 minute CD album called THE SOUNDS OF INDIA which sounds perfectly just like Indian streets and smoothly complements the visual imagery of STREET GRAPHICS. Only 100 copies of this almost vintage CD were released though if desired it can be bought by getting in touch with us.
In 2004 the most of this collection was also published in Indian issue of "kAk" (or 'hOw' in English) journal.
